Setting the standard in terms of availability, reliability and low maintenance costs, OP16 Gas Turbines allow for very cost-effective ‘always-on’ generation of electricity and heat. Thanks to its unique combustion technology, OP16 Gas Turbines can even turn dirty fuel gas that would otherwise be flared, vented, or simply wasted into green power and clean exhaust gas. OPRA's Story

The history of OPRA Turbines

OPRA Turbines was founded by Jan and Hiroko Mowill in 1991. Jan Mowill had previously led the gas turbine division at a major Norwegian industrial conglomerate where he developed and commercialized the world’s first radial gas turbine engine for industrial applications in 1964. Upon the establishment of OPRA (Optimal Radial Turbine), Jan and his team worked tirelessly to develop and engineer the OP16 Gas Turbine. By 1994 the original ultra low-emission combustor was already developed and patented as a result of successful testing. By 2003 the low-emission can combustion development had started.

After a successful demonstration of the OP16 Package in RuhrGas (Dorsten, Germany), OPRA Turbines sold its first commercialized OP16 Gas Turbine Package in 2005. OPRA Turbines continues to drive the world’s energy transition with over 140 gas turbine generator sets world-wide, accumulating over 2 million operating hours. Since August 2017, OPRA Turbines has been fully acquired by Dalian Energas and now is a proud member of the Dalian Energas group. OPRA Turbines has since opened a new state-of-the-art headquarter facility in Hengelo (NL) to further strengthen and increase production and testing capacity following recent growth in business, paving their way to becoming the leading provider of clean gas turbines for distributed energy solutions.

Management team

Guiding OPRA Turbines to a successful future

Juha van Riet CEO

Together with the Management Team Juha is developing and implementing the company’s growth strategies and ensuring operational excellence.

Previously having worked at Siemens, Woodward and Stork, Juha has more than 20 years of experience in global commercial and business leadership roles as a service/solution provider and key system supplier to the energy, oil & gas and industry sector. Juha is a Belgian national and holds an MSc degree in Electromechanical Engineering and a postgraduate degree in Business Administration.

Dr. Lars-Uno Axelsson Director R&D

In this function, Lars-Uno oversees OPRA’s engineering and R&D activities related to gas turbines and packages.

He has more than 15 years of experience in gas turbine technology and has held positions in the fields of aerodynamics, performance and combustion. He has 2 patents on gas turbine combustion technology to his name and has authored more than 20 technical publications on gas turbine technology. Lars-Uno holds an MSc and PhD from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.

Hilbert Elsinga Director Aftermarket & Service

Hilbert has more than 20 years of experience in customer service. He leads a dynamic aftermarket and service team.

Hilbert’s knowledge of OPRA’s product and his in-depth understanding of customer needs leads to fast and effective assessment of service situations. Previous roles have positioned Hilbert well to stimulate a service-oriented work environment with an emphasis on quality, accountability and teamwork.

Robbie Greving Manager Finance & Administration

Robbie is responsible for the financial accounting of all OPRA entities. He holds a post-bachelor degree in Finance as Qualified Controller.

Robbie has a broad knowledge of consolidation, project accounting and financial reporting in general to both internal and external parties. Robbie participated in the due diligence team at the time Energas acquired OPRA and continues to drive the integration of OPRA within the Energas company structure.

Frank Sanders Director Product Management

Frank has been with OPRA since 2007, starting in customer services, later also leading support to Marketing & Sales. From 2011 Frank assumed responsibility for Operations.

Prior to this, Frank worked with Rolls-Royce, starting his career in the gas turbine industry selling controls systems and services for turbines, recips, compressors and generators. He then moved to Ansaldo Thomassen, responsible for service sales for GE and Siemens heavy duty gas turbine installations. Frank has a degree in Industrial Engineering and Management. Besides his work at OPRA Turbines, Frank is currently engaged in the board of the Dutch Gas Turbine Association and the board of the High Tech Systems Park in Hengelo, The Netherlands.

Monique Kollenhof Manager QHSE

Before joining OPRA, Monique was a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt consultant specialized in guiding and advising service-oriented and industrial organizations.

For over 20 years, she managed multiple complex international and multidisciplinary EU projects with a focus on quality, innovation and training development. She is one of the authors of the “Working in the Automotive Industry” book series. Monique’s background ensures a pragmatic and process-oriented approach in defining, monitoring and improving processes as well as aligning interdepartmental targets, making customer and employee feedback part of the production processes, and using KPIs to manage the OPRA organization.

OPRA’s quality management system is focused on the development, assembly and servicing of gas turbine generator packages. Our quality management system helps us to improve our overall performance and provides a sound basis for sustainable development initiatives, consistently providing products and services that meet our customers statutory and regulatory requirements.


The DNV certifications are type approvals for specific products and allow OPRA the install and use these products in different field applications like onshore, offshore, and marine.


The German Association of Energy and Water Industries certified OPRA Turbines for grid interconnection of new installations within Germany. This is a mandatory certificate for grid integration of an installation in Germany.
